RRD X-FIRE: Slalom Boards

The X-Fires Ltd are the new RRD slalom boards. We asked the main man, Roberto Ricci and RRD Team Manager Ovido Ferrari all about them:

You have always had slalom boards in your range, but there seems to be more emphasis towards them this year. Why is this?

Ovido: Since the beginning RRD built part of its name & fame with their “Racing Machine” performance. The slalom-race boards were ever present in RRD collections, even until racing almost disappeared from the PWA scene. Nevertheless RRD kept alive the high performance shapes in this board range as you can see from looking back at our previous Year 10, 11 and 12 collections.
Now slalom appears again on the PWA scene, and its importance is growing year-on-year, therefore windsurfers and the media start to pay more attention to the racing discipline. Add this to our new X-Fire range, featuring new innovative details, and it gives the impression that RRD is giving new emphasis to their slalom range in their Year 13 (2008) collection, but it’s for sure that Roberto never gave up with his “Non Stop Research and Development” in racing, as we can see from past collections.

In the X-Fire collection he just synthesized some features from his racing design background that clearly increased the appeal and value of these slalom boards. By this we mean the typical RRD winning look, as well as features like the new concave deck, the new hull and step tail as well as details like the production MFC G10 CNC fins and the New Exclusive Deluxe Ergonomic Pads.

What is the thinking behind the pads and how do they work when gybing the board?

Roberto: Our Ergonomic Pads are designed to give the best comfort during long, full speed broad and downwind reaches. As you know, during long reaches you have to stay with your feet in an uncomfortable stance to keep the best board control (i.e.pulling up on your front foot and toes heavily) so with our pads you can reach the same stance without the physical effort that usually brings cramps and the resulting loss of control and performance. They are comfort personified!

On the gybing side, of course, you need to get a little used to this stance, but after a few sessions you will appreciate the better leverage on the rail whilst pushing on the front foot and their comfort on all points of sailing.

The cut outs seem to be quite big compared to some of the other brands. What is your reason for doing this?

Roberto: If you want to lead the pack you have to do it your own way! If you want to follow, just follow.

This year RRD have developed a slalom range of boards that are really Pro oriented, giving the best pointing speed and best control in overpowered sailing, as usually happens in PWA and top level competitions. With the deeper step tail the nose is higher and the board is freer on the water, yet the X-Fire overall trim (hull, volume and rails) allows the rider to maintain handling and control throughout choppy and tricky conditions. The results are an impressive acceleration and race winning performance without losing control.

Finally, who will be on your international team to sail these boards on the PWA Slalom Tour and other high profile race series?

Ovido: Presently we are looking to build a really strong RRD International Team. This can be seen from the wave and freestyle riders who have already joined us (Alex Mussolini, Cheo Diaz and Kevin Mevissen) and I can tell you that the X-Fire performances impressed all pro riders who have had the opportunity to test them, so I’m pretty confident we’ll soon have some big names riding the X-Fires at PWA Slalom events!

Of course we think that many national racers searching for performance will love our X-Fire range. Actually we have an Italian Race team captained by our experienced rider Andrea Rosati, who will attend the 2008 PWA Slalom Tour. Using these new X-Fire boards Andrea took 2nd place at the2007 Italian Slalom Championship after returning from many years not racing.
But we can’t forget our French speed freak and long distance specialist Christophe Fiorentini who will be one of Albeau’s contenders during this 2008 Defi Wind edition.

  • The tail features new recesses with improved area and edges and deeper step tail.
  • The tail width is narrower and middle outlines are wider.
  • The Concave Deck on the nose area has been developed to allow a lower sail centre moving forward from the mastfoot. That in combination with the scoopline gives better planing with bigger sails and more control in windy and choppy conditions.
  • The hull configuration is full double concave on a single V rail to rail.


X-Fire are equipped with G10 CNC fins. The X-Fire 145 and 130 have Maui Fin Company G10 CNC Racing fins. Lower volume boards are equipped with Maui Fin Company G10 Slalom fins, with more rake than racing fins and a tighter chord, to boost top speed and the best handiness.
