The indoor windsurfing event in Paris was no doubt a huge success for the organiser as 1000’s showed up to witness an incredible show packed with many past and present stars within our sport. Sadly, despite many best efforts much of the world’s windsurfing media were not invited, or even responded to… As a result the event was a huge highlight in France and very little reached windsurfers around the world.
Nevertheless the Denel brothers have been in touch and we are stoked to see and hear of their success at such an impressive arena. Here’s what happened, from their perspective.
During the 1st and 2nd april 2016, 12 years later, indoor windsurfing was back in the legendary Bercy Arena. Nothing less than 28 fans, a huge ramp and a public on fire that came to see the stars of yesterday and today. We were lucky enough to be there to live this incredible moment.
We arrived on Thursday for the trials. Jules was already qualified for the jump and decided to try his luck in slalom, successfully (only 4 places for more than 30 people). In the end, he finished 5th in jump and slalom. Right on the edge of the final but still very happy to have lived this crazy experience and to have competed with a few windsurfing legends.
Justin tried his luck also in the trials of jump, successfully also (2 places for more than 10 people, it was tight!). He decided to try risk-taking with a one handed forward after seeing everyone land perfect forwards. It was a bit scary to charge at the ramp still attached to the harness but as a result of his risk taking the doors to the final of the main event were opened.
Jules “What an incredible event for my first time in Bercy! An awesome experience full of unusual emotions that will remain in my memory.” – Soöruz, Neilpryde, JP Australia, Valoxy, Waveriding Zone, Select
Justin “To climb on stage in a full Bercy arena is something unique. But when it comes to being on the starting ramp I was carried away by I don’t know what, I tried some moves that I never dare to try in normal conditions. For me this event will remain unforgettable.” Simmer Style
