PWA Wave Women – Fresh Faces and Old Rivalries

The next heat up today in the women’s fleet is Daida Moreno vs Sarah-Quita Offringa. These two have already drawn each other in SQ’s first heat in Pozo, and now after Sarah has advanced through her first round heat here in Tenerife she faces the reigning world champion yet again.

Sarah-Quita Offringa and the Moreno Twins

Whilst Sarah-Quita is new to the waves, she is already proving to be a force to be reckoned with pulling of shakas, forwards and some hard backside hits. Surely it’s only a matter of time before this multiple world champion can cause an upset or two?

It looks to us so far that in the more marginal conditions SQ can really throw some freestyle moves into the mix, whilst when the real wind and waves come through there is no doubt in our mind Daida will dominate with the massive turns and jumps  that put her in another league to every other sailor, except for her sister Iballa.

It’s not a coincidence these two have drawn each other yet again, but it is an ongoing match up that we’ve seen before… on the freestyle tour almost 10 years ago.

Up until 2005 Daida had a stronghold on the PWA freestyle world tour, winning title after title. But in 2006 a young girl from Aruba rocked onto the scene, taking Rookie of the Year. A couple of years of closely fought battles followed, with Sarah-Quita finishing second to Daida in 2006 and 2007, but in 2008 SQ took her first world title and has dominated women’s freestyle ever since.

We can’t wait to watch the heats today, and the women’s wave fleet push higher and higher, as SQ and the other new talent on the wave tour challenge the current tour leaders.
