La Reunion Wave Classic

La Reunion Wave Classic

Aug 25th – Sept 5th 2011

For the 3rd consecutive year, the Island of La Reunion hosted a new format team wave competition, “La Reunion Wave Classic”. A month before it was due, the event was still not confirmed but at the last minute, “Reunion Windsurf” managed to make it happen. Once again, the competition was ‘blessed by the gods’ with full-on conditions.

A few weeks before the competition was due to start, local morale was not high: it has been a pretty weak winter here with no much in the way of wind and waves. As if by magic, though, as soon as the riders landed at Roland Garros airport, it turned on –the forecast was for perfect wind and wave conditions for crazy riding at Ravine Blanche and down the line perfection at Etang Salé.

The forecast came through and the competition was incredible – 7 days of sailing – 3 rounds completed, mast-high waves, moderate-strong trade-winds, 10 broken masts and 10 trashed sails, 86000 photos and 60 hours of film produced

It took a fair bit of time for the competition to get going – 2 free sailing sessions and a super session before the first rounds. Once the conditions were in, the wind and wave machine didn’t stop until 2 days before the end of the contest! “La Reunion Wave Classic” has once again proven itself to be one of the most radical wave events on the planet!

Riders’ feedback

Camille Juban

“La Reunion Wave Classic” was once again a high quality event. Thanks to perfect conditions, all the riders expressed themselves to the max, offering a great show to the locals.”

Colin Sifferlen

“I like the concept of this event because it’s half way between a trip and a competition. This kind of contest allows young guns to improve their style with no pressure. And La Reunion Island gathered all the perfect elements for that.”

Steven Pichot

“What I really enjoy at this competition is that I feel like traveling by staying at home. The pros are just impressive. I really wanted to go back to the beach sometimes to watch the show, especially on the day of the jumping session!”

Jules Denel

“That was my first Reunion Wave Classic and I was not disappointed. 7 days of sailing in awesome conditions, cool atmosphere, big swell, a jump session where each rider went off, beautiful scenery, nice meetings and top images. What else?”

Julien Taboulet

“The left of Etang Salé is so perfect to ride that you can have at least 5 really good turns if you stay inside the curl! Sick! This event is for sure the best event of the year in terms of radical waveriding!”

Sylvain Bourlard

“Sharing these times with the pros was a real pleasure. I have travelled a lot and I am still stocked to see how awesome the windsurfing conditions are here in La Reunion, ideally named as “intense island”. It says it all!”

Leon Jamaer

“After 18 days spent on the island of La Reunion, I can say now that I have probably spent the best times of my life. The people are so welcoming here on this beautiful island. I will never forget!”

Tom Hartmann

“The best souvenir for me was the people that made it a great time and of course all the radical images we produced during the event. The worst souvenir probably all the broken gear, cuts and sea urchins after several days of exploring the spots, but I guess that’s part of the game.”

Pierre Godet

“Once again, the island of La Reunion proved its ranking among the best windsurf spots on earth. Talented riders, world class waves, a different competition format… for all these reasons, “La Reunion Wave Classic” is a magic event.”
