World's First Floodlit Windsurf Destination Open To Public
It's most certainly not the world's first floodlit night windsurfing but this is the first time we have ever seen a spot that has actually opened up to the public so they can experience floodlit windsurfing on a daily basis.
Over a year in the making the centre owner of Blue Lagoon in Egypt has been working hard with a German partner to bring light to their windsurfing paradise. Having visited the spot just before Christmas, Boardseeker were lucky enough to chat with the centre owner Salama Mohammed and enjoy the perfect crystal clear waters of Blue Lagoon during the day time. Seeing the centre itself and the equipment certainly left us curious as to whether such a small budget and desolate windsurf centre could really pull this off.
Watch the first ever clips to be released of this night spot over the next few pages and read our interview with Salama.
BS: Salama, you used to work in Club Dahab for a long time, is this what fed your inspiration to set-up a centre here in Blue Lagoon?
Yes, we used to come here years ago, one of the first trips here was with Laure Treboux a few years ago where she made some amazing photos and got into a lot of magazines. It's a nice spot and over time we built up our hut at the point and turned it into a windsurf centre. We now have a partnership with Sailloft who provide us with gear and we have plenty of equipment for guests to enjoy this windsurfing paradise.
BS: For those who do not know tell us about the conditions and how to get here?
There are already a lot of videos online, including a few articles in magazines, yet still it is a quiet place. We often get groups of guests in the Summer, then it gets a little busy but if you want freedom to windsurf without the crowds then this is probably one of the best spots to come to.
Getting here is quite fun, there are various ways but first you have to get to Dahab. From there you can take either a 4x4 for the long and bumpy journey, a boat for the faster way or you can come by camel for the more local experience. To arrange it all just contact us by our facebook page.
BS: You've set-up a centre where there is no electricity, running water or even phone signal, how have you done this and hoe have you overcome these hurdles to be able to provide all the modern amenities?
Haha, yeah it's funny what the western world needs, we are used to this way of living, it's the easy life, the relaxed life but we also know that it is nice to have these extras. So now we have it all except the running water. We have installed a wind turbine and a phone receiver so we have a good internet connection with open wifi plus electricity to plug in and charge anything you need to bring with you. For water we just make sure we bring enough with us but just up the beach we have toilets and showers which anyone can use.
BS: So now you have a floodlit system ready to go, how have you become the first centre in the world to do it, it's extremely impressive?
[With a smile on his face] Yes definitely, we are stoked by it. I think we are lucky to have such a motivated German partner who also wants to experience this windsurfing by the night, through him and by shopping around Dahab we have managed to get it all together. We use two lorry batteries which we charge up with the wind turbine and from that we have the waterproof floodlights and the aerial floodlights which are often used in lakes and large swimming pools. Actually if you went snorkelling during the day you would find it hard to spot the underwater lights as they are hidden in artificial rocks.
At first we had a lot of issues when setting it up, cables were catching fire because they were not thick enough and the lights were causing the fuses to blow all the time but we think we are there at last. Anyone is welcome to come and join us and experience this incredible spot, we are always on hand to offer our best tips and to give you a warm Bedouin Tea afterwards.
BS: How can people get in touch with you?
Simply just LIKE our facebook page and send us a message on there, we will answer quick enough and help set-up all your travel arrangements, we can even take care of your transfer from the airport and a place to stay in Dahab if you need to break up the journey.
