So it is not all about the boys here in PWA Fuerteventura, there are also a number of female entrants. To be precise there are currently 11 entrants however there is a slim chance we may see a couple of last minute additions.
Talking of last minute entries, the list was setting at a very round 10 places until the final minutes of registration today when Karin Jaggi rocked up with partner in crime Patrik Diethelm and entered the fleet. Having previously been PWA Freestyle World Champion could she be the one to challenge Sarah-Quita Offringa for the top spot? Well Fuerteventura is known for its slightly wave conditions where forwards, double forwards, pushloops, backloops and more have all been witnessed in previous years. So with Karin's strong experience in the wave moves she could well cause a devastating impact on the fleet should conditions provide.
We spoke with Karin briefly and she stated "I'm entering because I'm here anyway and it would be nice to see how I fair up." In an interview with Roberto Hofmann in front of a packed marquee, Karin said that her and Patrik "were over here to test some new freestyle and slalom shapes and that she was keen to get on the water".
In a further twist we bumped into Daida and Iballa Moreno training at an out of town spot just north of Costa Calma. When we spoke to Iballa she said that she hadn't planned to compete but there could be a chance after hearing that Karin was entering... She also said that "the prize money situation wasn't great for us right now with a 'non event' from Pozo and Tenerife reduced to just €5000 for the girls, it might make sense to join in the freestyle". We asked her about her freestyle skills and she seemed quietly confident with a range of moves that are slightly different to the normal freestyle tricks. So watch this space before the girls kick off tomorrow and let us know your thoughts below, should they compete?
Lastly, what about Laure Treboux. Why isn't she on the starting list? Well the general consensus on the beach is that Laure has retired from competition. She successfully gained full residency to Australia recently and is clearly enjoying her time there with fiancée Si Hurry and she plans to complete her studies at her new home.
