We are back with our inside info from yet another PWA event, this time we are in Sylt and the sun is shinning the wind is building and the slalom sailors are enjoying the action on flat water. The talk on the beach today is all about one persons blistering speed despite the odds stacked against him. Lighter, shorter and perhaps less practised than the others, Taty Frans shot out the blocks from the word go yesterday. As each race progressed he showed that he was the man to beat, in the final race of the day he even finished near enough 100 meters clear of current tour leader, Antoine Albeau. We asked him a few quick questions to see if he has what it takes to win the first round and maybe the slalom discipline here at Sylt...
Boardseeker: Taty, you don't enter all the PWA Slalom events, which ones were you at this year and why just these?
Taty: This year I was only at Costa Brava and Sylt this year, the main reason is just because of budget really. I would like to enter them all, so we shall see for next year.
Boardseeker: You've entered here, what did you do to prepare for Sylt?
Taty: When I got back from Holland I did two days training, just to get the fins working for me. The sails and boards are already quick so I was really just tuning the fins. I don't really train slalom too much, but in June we (Kiri Thode and I) went to the Aruba High Winds and won that, it's the best practice I can do, going to events, even if they are not PWA.
Boardseeker: Are these your favourite conditions, flat water, strong offshore winds and a little bit gusty?
Taty: Well basically yesterday I wasn't really sure why I was going so fast, haha. My favourite conditions are 5.9/6.6 fully overpowered, I don't mind so much if it is choppy I just want to be really powered up, to get that kind of lifting off feeling. With my kit, I go really fast on my new sails, these rigs are really working well for me.
Boardseeker: You were going fast, very fast, do you think you can win this first round?
Taty: Yeah on the water I didn't feel like I was going so fast but I watched the video later and I was like what the.… haha! I was going really quick and I didn't realise it. I would really like to win one elimination, it would feel really good, but for sure when we get to the winners final the guys will push even more to win, but I feel ready for it. So yeah if I feel really good when the moment comes then yeah I will go for it for sure.
The thing is the guys are all really heavy and I'm not so big compared to them, or tall, so for me when it's windy and I'm really powered up I just go a lot faster...
Boardseeker: Lastly, there are always rumours running around of freestyle guys doing their moves on slalom kit from time to time, what's the truth? What have you and seen/done?
Taty: Yeah, haha, I've seen/done spocks and forward loops on the gear before, I heard of some people doing backloops! I think that is all that is possible.
