Its like musical sponsors at the moment for many of the top PWA riders.
In a surprise announcement a few weeks ago, we heard that multiple World Champion Kevin Pritchard had left Maui Sails (and long time friend and training partner Phil McGain) and was looking for a new sponsor.
It looks like Kevin has decided to keep it in the family and has chosen to ride for Gaastra Sails along with team manger, brother and long time Gaastra rider Matt Pritchard.
Kevins focus this year is to take the racing title back from Antoine Albeau. It will be a tough quest to conquer as Antoine has dominated all aspects of the racing tour for the past 3 years.
Both riders will be sailing Starboards, but with Antoine on Neil Pryde and Kevin on Gaastra it should make for an interesting year.......
This is what Gaastra had to say:
"Six time world champion, Kevin Pritchard has signed a multi year deal to ride for Gaastra Sails. Kevin has history with Gaastra sails and looks to continue where he left off by bringing them back the PWA World Championship Title.
Currently residing on the island of Maui, the 31 year old has his sights set on pushing his limits to another World Championship Title. “I am fired up to get on top of the podium once again" commented Pritchard. Kevin was crowned 2006 PWA Wave World Champion and was 2007 runner up on the PWA Slalom 4/2 discipline.
Kevin will be racing on the Dan Kaseler tuned Gaastra Vapor sails. “ I’m super stoked to have Kevin on the program, we have been pushing the limits with our technology and for 2008 I’m 100% confident that we have some of the best products on the market" said Dan.
Gaastra has led the way since the beginning of windsurfing with numerous World Champions. It all started with Robby Naish and his domination of the sport in the 80’s. Kevin Pritchard continued where Naish left off bringing 4 more World Titles to Gaastra’s credit. Matt Pritchard went on to add a Freestyle Title in 2002 and back to back Championships in the SuperX discipline in 2004 and 2005. Currently, Marcilio Browne and Gaastra hold the 2007 PWA Freestyle World Title.
Not only is Gaastra famous for it’s top riders and winning results, they are also credited for the invention of the Camber inducer currently being used on all windsurfing race sails. Gaastra sails are one of the largest windsurfing brands in the market today and will continue to make some of the greatest products known to windsurfing for years to come.
Kevin Pritchard is one of the best windsurfers on the planet. His experience and dedication to the sport make him one of the most visible and highly recognized personalities in windsurfing.
Gaastra is proud to have Kevin representing them for the upcoming years. “I have been looking for someone to step up and put the Gaastra brand back on top- Kevin has what it takes, I’m sure of that" said his brother and team manager Matt Pritchard.
Welcome to the Gaastra Team!"
