PWA Rookies of the year

Alice Arutkin in the girls division and Philip Koster in the men are the honoured sailors that have won this years “PWA Rookie of the year” award.

Alice Arutkin showed some good skills last year in Sylt during the PWA waves competition, but that was only her fist contact with the PWA Tour. There, she got the motivation to join the whole tour this year, both in the Waves and Slalom discipline (in which she is French Champion). Finishing 4th in Slalom only goes to show the great potential the young French sailor has, putting a threat on big names like Karin Jaggi and Valerie Ghibaudo.

On the men, the award went obviously to the biggest surprise of the year. Philip Koster competed two times before in Pozo, when he was only 12 and 13. But it was this year when “the kid” not only grew up physically but mentally to get everything together to perform amazingly in contests. With his great performance in the Pozo event (finishing 9th), and also putting a good fight against World Champion Kauli Seadi in Sylt, Philip has demonstrated that he well deserves the title.

Words from Jimmy Diaz to the awared:

To Alice Arutkin: “Your commitment and dedication to competition this year has been admirable and your performance, particularly in the Slalom discipline, has been exceptional for a young sailor, especially when you take into account the level of competition you were up against. To do so well whilst also putting in a strong performance in the Wave discipline is to be congratulated!”

To Philip Koster. “Through your performances on tour this year, you have displayed not only incredible natural talent, but also incredible courage and confidence in tough conditions. To find these attributes in such a young sailor is unusual to say the least, but to find them in someone so unassuming and courteous is a true testament to your character.”

Words from the Awarded:

Alice: “I am really happy and very honored to receive this award alongside Philip Koster, for whom I have a real admiration. He is really talented in waves for his age, and seems to have a big will to succeed. I have so a lot of satisfaction to have been chosen this year, especially to join the likes of previous champions; Junko Nagoshi and Sarah-Quita Offringa.”

Philip: “I feel astonished, proud and very happy. It’s a real honor to get this title. My first reaction was, ‘why me?’. I feel I have achieved something very special in my life.”
