The SWA events are renowned not just for windsurfing, but the night life party scene that goes on too. The 2nd round took place in Cardiff and we pass you over to Chris Beng for the inside scoop.
"The 2nd Round of the SWA RRD/Ezzy Wave series took place on the 20th-22nd February at Porthcawl in South Wales. Although the forecast looked good throughout the week, by the time Friday rolled round, the forecast had backed off completely. This didn’t deter the ever determined SWA crew from travelling down to Cardiff for a weekend of fun.
Insufficient wind on the Saturday meant no competition so some grabbed surfboards or tried their hand at SUPing, whilst others had a play on the turf dogs or even just sat in the café enjoying the view over the beautiful welsh beaches. The day ended back in Cardiff with a "surf meets safari" party aided by Cardiff Unis special Punch….don’t ask!
Although nowhere near epic, the conditions on Sunday allowed for a round of competition to be held. Judged by the boys from Pura Vida, the ladies hit the water first, displaying some very impressive sailors. Southampton’s Sarah Bibby had some good waves but it was not quite up to the standard of local girl Gemma Lewis (Cardiff) who seemed to catch every single wave out there!
Up next was the boys who battled it out with some technical and innovative riding in waist to shoulder high waves. SJ (Southampton) was picking good lines and putting in some strong turns all day. However in the final it was Adam Sims (Portsmouth) who beat local sailors Seb Willis (Cardiff) and Tom Malin (UWE), with powerful turns and even managing to pull out some aerials in the light winds.
Also announced at the weekend was the new SWA President, Al Delaney. Al was a previous president of Nottingham Universit Windsurf Club and has been a highly respected member of the committee for the last few years. We wish him all the best in his new role.
Thanks to Cardiff Uni, RRD/Ezzy and PuraVida for a fantastic weekend"
