2009 IWA Junior, Youth and Master European Championship

It was a great week for the British fleet at the recent IWA Junior, Youth and Masters Windsurfing European Championship. The event too place last week in Lacanau, in France.

The British won three out of the four Bic Techno 293 categories, and they brought home none less than 5 out of the 12 possible medals to be won.

Launceston’s Sam Sills, won the under 17 title this year and had a very happy birthday on the last day of the competition (he turned 16 on the day). Last year he was really close to the top prize in the Techno Worlds and Europeans, but this year he was determined to win the title, and so he did. Now he can be proud of having a new trophy next to his previous Under 15 World Title from 2007.

But this was just the beginning of the triumphs for the Sills family. The Sills twin sisters Saskia and Imogen, at only 12, won the silver and bronze medal in the Under 15 girls’. The gold medal in this fleet was won by also British Noelle Finch. Noelle had a very impressive performance and dominated the competition since the very beginning, wining 7 out of 10 races.

In the Under 15 boys, Saltash’s Kieran Martin won the last medal for the British team, and was no other than the gold one. He enjoyed the most comfortable last day of all the Brits as he wrapped up his title in emphatic style with a day to spare.

Oli Woodcock, RYA Techno Class Head Coach, said: “It was an awesome week and all the sailors did themselves proud. With over 180 competitors it was an excellent turn out and all the main players were out in force in each class. We looked really strong in all the fleets and even those sailors who didn’t win medals turned in performances to be pleased about over the course of the week.”
The next challenge will be at the 2009 IWA Junior, Youth and Masters Windsurfing World Championships that will take place at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy from the 22nd until the 29th of August.
The 2009 Worlds are being delivered by the RYA Events Team as part of the RYA’s ongoing commitment to bringing World Class events to Great Britain.
