As the dust settles on the pre-season sponsorship swap shop, Micah Buzianis briefly chats to us before he tests some JP slalom Prototypes.
Micah will be the first person to seriously race JP slalom boards, a company who started out very much in the hardcore wave market.
Boardseeker: So why make the change to Pryde/JP Micah Buzianis: Lots of reasons really, the main reason is that North have moved there R&D out of Maui to Gran Canaria. I am based in Maui and it works better for me with Neil Pryde over there. JP also want to become more of a force in slalom racing, so it works out really well.
BS: Was any of the reason to do with Bjorn Dunkerbeck moving to North at the start of last year? MB: Not at all, Bjorn and myself are good enough friends for there not to be any rivalry like that, only when racing.
BS: As JP don’t do a Formula board are you still going to race Formula? MB: Definitely, it actually should work out better because I can choose which ever board is working out best. For the PWA 42 racing I will use the current 2006 JP slalom boards.
BS: Are Neil Pryde committed to Formula then? MB: Definitely, there was a mis-read press release, but we already have the new race sails ready for the season.
BS: Are you looking forward to the possibility of slalom racing at Pozo again? MB: Yes I heard that possibility, that will be interesting with the old gang racing there again. 42 will make it hard though, because pozo can range from 10 to 50 knots, and it is pretty hard to cover that range.
BS: Have you been involved much with the development of the JP slalom shapes? MB: I am just getting into now, these are what Werner Gnigler is working on at the moment, they are a little narrower than the 06 ones but not much, we are seeing what difference it makes and experimenting with the tail cut outs. I am here for a week to go through a number of shapes with him. They are working well though.
BS: With JP\'s pedigree lying in waves, will we see more of you on the wave tour: MB: Well I would like too, I will see how it fits in with my schedules. I will do the Hawaii one, but not Sylt or Pozo as I will be concentrating on the racing there.
