Day 2 – Calema Mid Winters

Day 2 Report by Devon Boulon:

It was a long day at the beach. As we spent many hours waiting for consistent winds while also trying for two different starts and then going back to the beach to wait some more. Finally around 2pm the wind came in quite strong around 20 knots steady and we headed out to really start our racing for the day.

Race #2 I was on my 11.6 with my 70cm R17 and was a bit overpowered. I had a good start with Antione above and behind but as he was coming down on top of me I didn’t push up as hard as I could which allowed him to go over the top of me. Him, Gonzo and Woijtek tacked in front of me as well as Pieter, Phil and Wilhelm. They all rounded in front but I had good downwind speed and passed over the top of Wilhelm, Phil and Pieter. Woijtek passed Gonzalo to finish in 2nd behind Antione. Gonzo took 3rd with me in 4th and Wilhelm in 5th.

Race #3 This time I had a really clean start up on top of Antione and Woijtek. They both tacked first to round very closely battling for first. I rounded in 3rd in front of Gonzalo. Then disaster for me on the 2nd upwind. I was right on Antiones line as he made the mark and Woijtek missed and had to double tack. But I got a header at the last second and missed and instead of rounding 2nd had to round 5th as Gonzalo and Jimmy cruised past me. Jimmy and I had quite a battle to the finish which left both of us exhausted but he just managed to hold me off. Antione took a second bullet with Woijtek 2nd and Gonzalo 3rd. So I had settle for 5th.

Race #4 The wind was still increasing as I was down on my 10.8 and an R17 67. I was still setting my adjustable cutouts at the lowest setting. Unfortunately I couldn’t get the speed off the start line and got rolled by Gonzalo and Woijtek and had to go beneathe Seth. I tacked just behind Gonzo and Woijtek who rounded well in the lead. I almost blew up in a big gust but saved it to round in 4th behind Jimmy. I quickly past him and the passed Gonzalo at the leeward mark as he fell trying to get around. Then Antione had excellent upwind speed and passed me and continued chasing after Woijtek. But Woijtek held him of to take the bullet as Antione’s base was broken but the rest of it still held together to get him across the finish line. I finished in 3rd in front of Gonzalo and Jimmy.<,br><,br> Race #5 There was to much of a crowd at the pin end and I didn’t even make the bouy on the start, forcing me to tack over and go below the whole fleet and out to the right side where I didn’t want to go. When I tacked back for the mark Gonzalo and Antione rounded well out in front with Woijtek and the rest of the guys chasing behind. I rounded deep around 12th but started passing people quickly on the downwind moving up to 6th I made an attempt to catch Phil and Keith at the second leeward mark but got stuck there and dropped well back from them but then passed Keith as he just barely made the windward mark and got stuck on the anchor line. This finished me in 5th again. Antione was again motoring on his 10.7 and took his third bullet of the day. Woijtek passed Gonzo to finish 2nd yet a again. Gonzo had to settle for 3rd with Phil having his best race up in 4th.

After the fourth race of the day we were done and headed back to pack up and head home to relax until the banquet that evening. So after 5 races Antione is sitting out in 1st ahead of Woijtek in 2nd. Gonzalo is in 3rd just two points ahead of me in 4th. Even though the forecast for tomorrow isn’t looking good I’m hoping for something to give us a race or two to give me the chance to get back on the podium. So stay tuned for more action…….
