News Headlines – Mon 14th

At last, over the weekend there\’s been some monster wave action (although still no official competition) at the Fuerte Wave Classic. Day 5 on Saturday saw a few competitors humbled at Puertito which was breaking double-mast high in fluky 10-15 knot winds. Across the Atlantic, Britain\’s Nick Dempsey\’s picked up gold in the RS:X fleet at the Buzios International Regatta in Brazil. He beat Brazil’s Ricardo Santos and Portugal’s Joao Rodrigues  into 3rd and 4th, so seems on fine form going into April\’s prestigious Princess Sofia Regatta in Palma. More here.

Not a million miles away, the freestylers have been in training on Bonaire – and here\’s how Davy Scheffers, Tonky Frans, Youp Schmit and co have been getting on this last couple of months…

Next stop, Vietnam where the first PWA comp of the season kicks off later this month. Starboard freestyler Dieter van Eyken is already out there and finally scored some real wind on Saturday too. Check out his report on

Down south, Aussie formula and slalom racer (and veritable internet phenomenon!) Sean O\’Brien has signed back to Starboard having started his career with them as a grommet, having since risen to the heights of Australian Champion and PWA regular – “I always had a feeling I would one day end up back under the Tiki flag”. Up to Europe now, where The Loft R&D team of Ben Van Der Steen and Ludo Jossin have been testing Monty Spindler\’s new Racing Blade in Tarifa. Check it out – more on Loft Sails here.

Over on Maui, check this out courtesy of Chris Murray whose pal Griffin Freysinger sailed 5 miles upwind from Maliko to ride Jaws last week. After a mission like that, he can be excused for sticking pretty close to that shoulder, eh…

Back in the UK, the BSA have announced that the first round of 2011 national slalom racing is set to kick off over the Easter weekend (24-24 April) down at Hayling Island with sponsors Tushingham / Starboard promising a huge event the day after the Round Hayling Marathon. And finally, of course it\’s Valentine\’s Day today, and women\’s site FLOWindsurfing have marked the occasion with their latest pretty-boy \’Hunk of the Month\’. Adam Lewis is already beating them off with a stick out in El Medano, Tenerife, so form an orderly queue ladies…
