A succesful Gran Canaria PWA Grand Slam saw 2 double elimination of women’ freestyle, 1 women’s wave, 1 men’s wave and 11 rounds of Slalom 42.
Antoine Albeau completely thrashed the opposition with 10 straight wins in the slalom. The fight was really on for 2nd and 3rd, this was between the last overall world champion – Kevin Pritchard and Bjorn Dunkerbeck. In the end Kevin was just ousted by Bjorn Dunkerbeck.
Victor Fernandez Lopez and Daida Rueno Moreno showed similar dominance to Albeau in the waves and freestyle. Victor comfortably beat Kauli Seadi in what has been heralded as one of the all time best heats. Daida remains unbeaten in the waves and the freestyle. Some fresh new talent is coming into the womens windsurfing highlighted by the number of competitors and the successes of Laure Treboux of Switzerland and Sarah Quita Offringa from Bonaire. Laure Treboux finished 3rd overall in the waves.
Laure: “: I\'m stoked, didn\'t expect such good result for my first PWA! I hope to do good in Fuerte too, and have a good overall result at the end of this year.
With Swifty out, the best British success was Nik Baker, once again showing fine consistency and finishing inside the top 10 despite the onslaught from the new generation. Phil Horrocks also gave a great glimpse of what he is worth by fighting through the double before going down to local lad, Jonas Ceballos.
Ruth Elliot also put up a good display and knocked a few people out in the womens wave competition. She was unlucky to meet Daida Moreno so early on, ending her run.
The next event starts in a few days in Sotovento. We will be there to bring you up to date news!
