The Dutch 2006 Wave Championships

The Swedish wave champs had their fun, now it is the turn of the Dutch. It must be equinox in the North Sea.

Ben Van der Steen, usually better known for racing took a well deserved win at the spot in Holland.

“The Spot” at Zandvoort beach on the North Sea delivered classic conditions with 30 knots side-onshore wind and waves up to 6 feet high for the Dutch Wave Championship. A strong showing of top riders like Peter Volwater, Nikaj Droop and Martin Ten Hoeve all sailing at a very high level made for some serious competition, but at the end of the day it was Naish Sails Rider Ben van der Steen who emerged victorious – after finishing 3rd in the first elimination, Ben stepped it up for the second round, and won not only the second elimination but also the title of “Dutch Wave Champion!” (but did he go Dutch on the prize money?)
